With new car sales dropping wildly in Victoria in July 2020 due to the harsh Stage 4 restrictions imposed due to COVID-19, new car buyers made it clear that they were in no way interested in buying cars. It is now clear that the entire automotive industry is facing continued challenging and difficult conditions, exacerbated by the advent of more and more restrictions thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following a rather impressive June 2020, sales remain down across the nation. Nationally, more than 72,505 vehicles were sold during the month, which represents a decrease of 12.8 per cent on July 2019, when sales totalled 83,184.
Evergreen brand Toyota remained Australia’s most popular brand in July, selling 15,508 vehicles for the month. Other brands were quite the distance behind with Mazda (7806 sales), Mitsubishi (4684), Hyundai (4634) and Kia (4625 sales) all trailing the Japanese giant.
Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) remain the most popular class of vehicle in Australia. They now account for 50.4 per cent of all vehicles sold. Our recently reviewed Toyota RAV4 took the top podium position as Australia’s best selling car in July 2020. The RAV4’s incredibly strong sales result stems from improvements in supply of the popular SUV which had waiting lists of up to 10 months.
It was also worth noting that light commercial vehicles represented 20.5 per cent of the market, due in part to the government’s focus on the Instant Asset Write-off to stimulate purchases of commercial vehicles for businesses both large and small.
