Ahead of an Australian release in the first half of 2025, more details about the Ford Ranger PHEV have been revealed, including a new PHEV-exclusive Stormtrak limited edition. Combining a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 75kW electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery, the targeted all-electric driving range for the Ranger PHEV is 45km with its battery doubling as a 6.9kW power supply for tools or camping gear. Importantly, the Ranger PHEV keeps the standard model’s 3,500kg towing rating, which is an important consideration for those using it to tow.
“The Ranger PHEV delivers the benefits of electrification together with the hard-working
performance that has built Ranger a loyal customer base in Australia and New Zealand.” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.
“We ensured our first PHEV pickup in Australia and New Zealand would be a hugely capable tool
for work and off-roading, as well as a smart vehicle with the tech, connectivity and EV-only
capability for family life,”
In Europe, the Ranger PHEV makes combined outputs of 206kW of power and 690Nm of torque, making it torquier than the Ranger Raptor. The PHEV uses the 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that’s available in the Ranger in some other markets – as well as the top-spec Australian Volkswagen Amarok – combined with a 75kW electric motor. The electric motor draws its power from an 11.8kWh battery that can be charged from either an AC charger, the petrol engine or regenerative braking.
According to Ford, a new ‘Modular Hybrid Transmission’ (MHT) integrates the Ranger PHEV’s e-motor between the engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, which allows for hybrid driving, and the traction battery is packaged between specially engineered frame rails.
According to Ford, there are four new driving modes specific to the PHEV variant of the Ranger:
- Auto EV: keeps Ranger PHEV in the best mode for performance and efficiency
- EV Now: provides all-electric drive
- EV Later: keeps a portion of charge in reserve so that it can be deployed later
- EV Charge: prioritises recharging the battery while driving
In addition to all-electric driving, the Ford Ranger PHEV debuts a new feature called ‘Pro Power Onboard’ with three sockets (one located in the cabin and two located in the tray) offering up to 6.9kW of power – the cabin socket is limited to 2.3kW, while the tray sockets are limited to 3.45kW each – which allows owners to power tools on the job site, or camping gear when off the grid.
In addition to detailing the Ranger PHEV, Ford has also revealed a new Stormtrak limited edition, which is exclusive to the PHEV drivetrain and will be launched locally with the other Ranger PHEV variants. Over the Wildtrak, the Stormtrak adds a new ‘Chill Grey’ exterior with interior inserts in the same colour, as well as Matrix LED headlights, Ford’s flexible rack system, a 360-degree camera, pro-trailer backup assist and a B&O sound system.
Finally, Ford has also confirmed that the PHEV drivetrain will also be offered in more models in the Ranger lineup: the XLT, Sport and Wildtrak will also be offered, making the drivetrain more accessible to more buyers. Unlike the rest of the Australian Ranger lineup that’s made in Thailand, the PHEV will be sourced from South Africa. Because of a lack of a free trade agreement, the Ranger PHEV will be slapped with a five per cent import tariff.
The Ford Ranger PHEV will go on sale in Australia in the first half of 2025, with local pricing and specifications to be confirmed before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
