The all-new 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupé has been officially revealed overnight in Europe, with its new front design causing a stir amongst BMW enthusiasts and the world’s automotive media alike.
The 4 Series range will be topped off with the M440i xDrive as its flagship model. The new variant brings a 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbo in-line six-cylinder sending 285kW and 500Nm to all four wheels through the silky smooth eight-speed ZF automatic transmission we all know and love.
BMW has confirmed that the entry-level 420i and mid-range 430i models will also be hitting our shores, producing 135kW/300Nm and 190kW/400Nm respectively from twin-scroll turbo petrol four-cylinder engines, with drive also being sent through the eight-speed automatic mentioned above.
Riding on the new BMW CLAR platform, like the latest G20 3 Series, the 4 Series will feature improved dynamic qualities, better passive safety protection as well as improved efficiency thanks to its lighter construction. The new 4 Series is now 128mm longer than the outgoing 4 Series at 4768mm, with substantial increases in its width and wheelbase as well. All of this combines to make the car look more aggressive and give it a sportier stance, whilst ensuring that there is more room inside.
The new 4 Series no longer features the well-known ‘Hoffmeister Kink’, the trademark C-pillar design featured on BMWs since the early 1960s. The car’s windows rise towards the rear, emphasising BMW’s sporting credentials and the 4 Series’ aestheticism.
LED headlights are now standard on the new 4 Series, with BMW’s Laserlight optional. Also debuting on the latest 5 Series, Laserlight provides cornering light ability, variable illumination depending on the environment as well as a high beam range of up to 500m.
Inside, the new 4 Series features an interior reminiscent of the current 3 Series. Part pieces include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver and a 10.25-inch media in the centre of the dashboard. Wireless Apply CarPlay and Android Auto are set to feature in locally as well.
BMW Australia confirms that the new model will go on sale in October, with the three petrol variants mentioned above spearheading our local range. Remember to check back closer to the launch date for pricing and specifications.
