Australian pricing and specs for the 2021 Toyota Kluger, which has been on sale overseas for over two years, has been released. The new range as before includes a petrol V6 with either two- or all-wheel drive as well as never before seen on a Kluger: a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain.

As before, the 2021 Toyota Kluger range offers three models: the base model GX, mid-spec GXL and top of the range Grande. The base two-wheel drive Kluger GX kicks off the range at $47,650 plus on roads – $2,800 more than the previous model. Adding all-wheel drive to the GX brings the price up to $51,650 and the Hybrid Kluger GX (with standard AWD) is $54,150.

Standard GX features include LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, dual-zone manual air-con, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital radio, auto lights and wipers and five USB ports.

There has been a major jump in safety tech with the new 2021 Toyota Kluger as all models come with traffic sign recognition, steering assist, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, auto high beam, blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert.

Jumping up to the 2021 Kluger GXL 2WD brings the price to $56,850 (a $9,200 increase over the Kluger GX). In addition to the GX, the GXL comes standard with you also get synthetic leather upholstery, electric and heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, a power tailgate and satellite navigation. Adding AWD to the 2021 Kluger GXL brings the price to $60,850 and if you opt for a hybrid then the price increases to $63,350.

The top-spec Kluger Grande starts at $68,900 for a 2WD V6 and gains a panoramic sunroof, cooled front seats, real leather upholstery, a heads-up display, a 360-degree birds eye camera, and an 11-speaker JBL sound system over the GXL. Adding AWD adds $4,000 ($72,900) and the hybrid adds $2,500 on top of that ($75,400).

Now underpinned by Toyota’s TNGA platform the Kluger‘s wheelbase is now 60mm longer than its predecessor at 2,850mm, which has added more interior space, and its overall length is 60mm longer too at 4,966mm.

The standard 3.5-litre V6 outputs are unchanged from the outgoing model with 218kW of power and 350Nm of torque. Also unchanged is the gearbox, which is an eight-speed torque converter automatic. Toyota claims an average fuel consumption figure of 8.7L/100km for the two-wheel-drive V6 variant, and 8.8L/100km for the all-wheel-drive V6 models.

New for the 2021 Toyota Kluger is the hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to three electric motors with a combined power output of 184kW – Toyota doesn’t list a combined torque figure. Despite a heavy two+ tonne kerb weight, the 2021 Toyota Kluger hybrid will claims combined fuel consumption of just 5.6L/100km.

The 2021 Toyota Kluger is due in showrooms in June and full specs will be released then. Competitors to the Kluger include the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and Peugeot 5008.
