Ahead of its October on-sale date, Australian specifications and pricing for the 2022 Kia Sportage has been revealed. Not long after its global debut, the new Sportage sits on a new platform that’s shared with the new Hyundai Tucson with a new look, new interior, new technology and more luxury. Sitting in the most popular segment in Australia, the new Sportage will go up against the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Karoq, Peugeot 3008, Mitsubishi Outlander and its aforementioned Tucson cousin.
“Sportage has always had a knack of reinventing itself more than any other Kia model and the new fifth-generation, with its unique boomerang-shaped LEDs, razor rear lamps and swooping curved display is no different,” said Damien Meredith, Kia Australia’s Chief Operating Officer.
“The all-new Sportage promises to be a substantial evolution over the outgoing Sportage and is a true reflection of where not only the nameplate, but the Kia brand is heading.”
Like its Tucson cousin, the 2022 Kia Sportage uses mostly carryover engines from the previous generation car, including a 115kW/192Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 137kW/417Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine. Replacing the previous 2.4L petrol engine is a 132kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is also available in the Tucson.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine is front-wheel drive, while the turbo petrol and turbo diesel are all-wheel drive – the former is available with either a six-speed manual (thank you Kia!) or six-speed automatic, while the diesel is solely available with an eight-speed auto and the turbo petrol a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. Kia is yet to announce performance and fuel economy data.
The 2022 Kia Sportage range will be available in four models: base S, mid-spec SX and SX+, and top-spec GT-Line. Standard equipment on the base S (from $34,490 drive away) includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED exterior lighting, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker sound system, manual air-conditioning, a leather steering wheel, a full-size spare wheel, cruise control, digital radio and cloth trim. The S is available with either the 2.0-litre petrol (manual or auto) 2WD or 2.0-litre turbo diesel AWD.
Safety kit includes seven airbags (including a front centre unit), auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and intersection assist, automatic post-collision braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist and lane follow assist, intelligent speed limit assist, auto high beam, tyre pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and for automatic models, adaptive cruise control, an electric parking brake and braking for the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems.
Above the S, the SX (from $37,490 drive away) adds larger 18-inch wheels, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen with inbuilt navigation, power lumbar adjustment for the driver, dual-zone climate control with automatic window defogging, auto wipers, auto up/down front windows, a leather shift knob and remote-folding rear seats. The SX is available as a 2.0-litre petrol (manual or auto) in 2WD form or a 2.0-litre diesel with AWD.
The SX+ (from $44,490 drive away) then adds 19-inch wheels, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, artificial leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, front parking sensors, rear privacy glass, an electric tailgate, LED front fog lights, an auto-dimming rear mirror, keyless entry and start and paddle shifters. The SX+ is available with all three engines, though is auto only.
Finally, the GT-Line (from $51,990 drive away) adds machined wheels, a curved 12.3-inch touchscreen with another 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, real leather upholstery, memory settings for the driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, upgraded LED exterior lighting, a panoramic glass sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera with automatic rear braking, alloy sports pedals, remote smart park assist (diesel only) and ambient lighting. The GT-Line is only available with the 1.6-litre turbo petrol or 2.0-litre turbo diesel and both feature all-wheel drive.
The 2022 Kia Sportage will be available in ‘Clear White’ (the only no-cost option), while $520 extra gets you ‘Steel Grey’, ‘Gravity Grey’, ‘Vesta Blue’, ‘Dawning Red’, ‘Fusion Black’, ‘Snow White Pearl’ or ‘Jungle Wood Green’.
