Not long after its local debut at the Fully Charged Live electric car show earlier in 2023, Australian pricing and specifications for the 2023 MG4 have been announced ahead of its local arrival in the second half of 2023. Priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs, the MG4 will initially be offered in three models with up to 450km of range on the WLTP cycle, though two more additions to the range are under consideration for local release by the end of 2023.
According to the company, “with an extremely competitive $44,990 (AUD) plus on-road costs* starting price, MG’s first fully-electric hatchback optimises space, technology, affordability and driving quality. The MG4 EV is the first to use the innovative new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that will underpin a new generation of MGs, featuring rear-wheel drive, 50:50 weight distribution and thin battery technology.”
There will be two battery sizes on offer with the 2023 MG4 initially, with a 64kWh battery on the entry-level Excite and mid-spec Essence 64kWh. The base Excite offers up to 450km of range (WLTP) with the Essence slightly less at 435km thanks to larger wheels. The 64kWh battery can change from 10 to 80 per cent in 60 minutes using a 50kW DC fast charger and can be charged at up to 140kW.
The top-spec (for now) Essence uses a larger 77kWh battery for a WLTP-rated range of 530km. 64kWh models use a 150kW electric motor powering the rear wheels for a 7.9-second 0-100km/h sprint time – the 77kWh battery uses a more powerful 180kW motor for a sub-seven second 0-100km/h run. MG has also confirmed that both a 51kWh and X-Power dual-motor all-wheel drive (and an sub-4.0 second 0-100km/h sprint time) are under consideration to join the range later in 2023.
Standard equipment on the entry-level MG4 Excite ($44,990 plus on-road costs) includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dusk-sensing automatic LED lighting, cloth upholstery, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with MG’s ‘iSmart’ connected car features, a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a four-speaker sound system and a rotary gear selector.
Standard safety equipment across the range includes auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, intelligent speed limit assist with traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistance with lane departure warning, driver attention monitoring and auto high beam.
The upper-spec 2023 MG4 Essence ($47,990 +ORC in 64kWh form or $55,990 +ORC in 77kWh form) adds larger 18-inch alloy wheels, leather trim with cloth inserts, inbuilt satellite navigation, a 360-degree camera, a height-adjustable boot floor, a wireless phone charger, two extra speakers (six in total), an auto-dimming rear mirrors, door open warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist.
Six colours will be available for the 2023 MG4: ‘Dover White’, ‘Brixton Blue’, ‘Black Pearl’, ‘Camden Grey’, ‘Dynamic Red’, ‘Volcano Orange’ and ‘Sterling Silver’.
