Mitsubishi has released local pricing and specifications for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ahead of its August 2022 launch. Priced from $54,590 plus on-road costs, the new PHEV uses a larger battery pack for extended electric driving range, more performance thanks to more powerful motors and, unlike the previous-generation PHEV, seven seats in the top-spec models – that’s in addition to all the improvements made with the latest generation Outlander.
“Mitsubishi is proud of its pioneering plug-in hybrid EV heritage,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO, Shaun Westcott.
“With All-new Outlander signifying a significant shift in Mitsubishi’s design philosophy, it’s the perfect vehicle with which to showcase our continued leadership in the PHEV drivetrain space,” he said.
Under the bonnet of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a 98kW 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that’s mated to a 70kW front electric motor and a 100kW rear electric motor for 185kW and 450Nm in total. Power is drawn from a 20kWh battery pack that gives up to 84km of all-electric driving range and the claimed combined fuel consumption rating is just 1.5L/100km on the NEDC cycle.
Charging the Outlander PHEV from 0 to 80 per cent can be done in as little as 38 minutes using a DC CHAdeMO plug – not the usual CCS socket that appears more commonly. A 240-volt wall outlet gives a 100 per cent charge in 12 hours, while a dedicated home charging wall box will lower this to 6.5 hours.
The lineup for the PHEV variants in the Outlander range is smaller than the regular Outlander, starting with the entry-level ES and moving through the mid-spec Aspire and Exceed to the top-spec Exceed Tourer. Standard kit on the ES (from $54,590 plus on-road costs) includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, digital radio, dual-zone climate control, cloth upholstery, a urethane steering wheel, 40:20:40-split rear seating, push button start and mode two and mode three charging cables.
Safety kit includes eight airbags (including a driver’s knee airbag and a front centre unit too), auto emergency braking with intersection assist, pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, driver attention monitoring, adaptive cruise control, emergency lane assistance, a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.
The Outlander PHEV Aspire ($60,990 +ORC) that’s shown in these press photos adds larger 20-inch wheels, auto lights and wipers, silver roof rails, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, auto-folding mirrors, Matrix automatic adaptive high beam, a power tailgate with kick-to-open functionality, two 1500W 3-pin outlets, two rear USB ports, a 10.8-inch heads-up display, en electric driver’s seat, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rear mirror, automatic reverse braking, rear privacy glass, suede and leather trim, rear cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree camera.
The Outlander PHEV Exceed ($65,990 +ORC) then adds body coloured lower exterior trim, a nine-speaker Bose sound system, a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, quilted leather upholstery in black or light grey, front door ambient lighting, two extra seats for a total of seven, a powered front passenger seat, memory functionality for the front seats and mirrors, sunshades in the second row doors and aluminium centre console trim.
Finally, the Outlander Exceed Tourer PHEV ($68,490 +ORC) adds black and tan leather upholstery, massaging front seats and a contrasting roof colour.

- Aspire PHEV five-seat: $60,990
- Exceed PHEV seven-seat: $65,990
