Ford Australia has revealed local pricing and specifications for its new second-generation Transit Custom van. Arriving in Australia in the second quarter of 2024, the 2024 Ford Transit Custom adds new technology, new functionality and an updated drivetrain. Predictable, there have been price rises of up to $5,600 but Ford says that the increase in functionality more than covers the price rise.
“Businesses both big and small will be able to purchase the all-new Transit Custom with confidence, knowing Ford engineers have worked hard to incorporate practical, purposeful features to help them get the job done,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia.
“With the new award-winning Transit Custom, we’re continuing to deliver on our promise of offering our customers the best possible commercial vehicles, whether they’re after a van, a pick-up or a full-size truck.”
Priced from $55,990 plus on-road costs for the Trend standard wheelbase and $56,990 +ORC for the Trend Long wheelbase, there is now only a single model on offer, though a electric variant is planned for later on in its lifecycle. The price has risen $4,600 for the SWB and $5,600 for the LWB compared with the previous shape van.
The 2024 Ford Transit Custom sits on a new platform and now features fully independent rear suspension, which has increased the load length – it has increased to 3,050mm for the SWB (an increase of 496mm) and 3,450mm for the LWB (an increase of 529mm). The total storage space in the new 2024 Ford Transit Custom has increased to 5.8 and 6.8 cubic metres for the SWB and LWB, up from 5.7 and 6.6 respectively.
Interestingly, the payload capacity has dropped to 1,269kg for the SWB and 1,223kg for the LWB, which is down from 1,353kg (SWB) and 1,291kg (LWB) respectively. The braked towing capacity has increased to 2500kg for both body styles, up from 1,900kg.
The same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine underpins the new 2024 Ford Transit Custom as it did with the previous shape, though it has been updated. It produces 125kW of power and 390Nm of torque and power is sent to the front wheels via a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.
Sitting in the centre of the 2024 Ford Transit Custom’s dashboard is a new 13-inch touchscreen running Ford’s ‘Sync 4’ infotainment system. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation and an onboard 5G modem for live services. There is also access to the FordPass app and also featured is a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 12-inch partially digital driver’s display.
The Transit Custom now comes equipped with a lot of safety kit as standard. This includes Adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking (AEB) with intersection assist and reverse auto braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. There is also now a new roof-mounted airbag for the front passenger, which clears up room on the dashboard for a larger storage cubby that can fit a laptop or A4 piece of paper.
