Peugeot Australia has confirmed that the 2024 Peugeot 408 coupe SUV will be sold in Australia from late 2023. Revealed last year, the 408 will launch locally solely with plug-in hybrid power – at least, initially – and will likely be offered only in a high-spec GT model with that powertrain. Joining the 308, 508 and 3008 plug-in hybrids, as well as the e-Partner and e-2008 electric cars, the 408 will be the brand’s latest electrified product in Australia.
Kate Gillis, Managing Director Peugeot Australia, commented: “It is with great excitement that we announce the impending arrival and opening of expressions of interest for the Peugeot 408.
“2023 is a momentous year for the brand locally as we continue to introduce electrified variants across Passenger, SUV and LCV segments. Aligning to our electrification journey, the dynamic Peugeot 408 will launch in a single powerful plug-in hybrid variant in Australia.
At launch, the 408 will offer just one drivetrain: a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid aided by a 12.4kWh battery that also features in the 308 GT Sport. The total system output is 165kW of power and up to 67km of all-electric driving range (WLTP) is claimed. The battery can be charged at a maximum of either 3.7kW or, optionally, 7.4kW – hopefully the latter makes it to Australia. It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and is front-wheel drive only.
The 408 sits on the same ‘EMP2’ platform as other larger models in the Peugeot Citroen range, including the aforementioned C4, as well as the new 308, the 508, 3008 and 5008. Measuring 4,690mm long with a 2,790mm long wheelbase and a height of 1,480mm, the 408 has a healthy 536-litre boot that expands to 1,611L with the rear seats folded.
Likely to be offered initially in a high-spec GT Sport model only, the 2024 Peugeot 408 will likely offer features like Matrix LED headlights with adaptive high beam functionality, auto emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, lane keep assist with lane trace assist and semi-automatic lane changing, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera, driver attention monitoring and even potentially an infrared night vision system through the digital driver’s display.
The 2024 Peugeot 408 will launch locally in late 2023, with Australian pricing and specifications to be confirmed before then. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
