The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs have finally hit the Australian market, over four years after their European debut, with a very sharp starting price of $59,990 before on-road costs. Both SUVs are now on sale with order open up, but don’t expect to see the first customer deliveries of the ID.4 and ID.5 until mid-2025.

VW’s keen pricing is very much welcome, and a pleasant surprise, as the ID.4 Pro comes in significantly lower than the $75,000 forecasted two years ago, and it even undercuts the freshly updated Tesla Model Y RWD, which starts at $63,400 in its Launch Series form. It’s clear that the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 mean business.

Originally, the ID.4 was supposed to launch in 2022, following the ID.3 hatch. However, the ID.3 has been put on hold, with only the Cupra Born making the trip from Europe to Australia. The ID.4 became a little forgotten as VW Australia decided to wait for this upgraded model with its longer range and more power.

Initially, Volkswagen will offer two fully electric variants: the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro and the all-wheel-drive ID.5 GTX. By July, the lineup will expand to include the ID.5 Pro and ID.4 GTX, pricing for which has not yet been announced.

The ID.4 Pro features a single 210kW/545Nm rear electric motor and a 77kWh (usable) battery, delivering a claimed 544km driving range in WLTP testing, 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds, and 175kW DC charging.

The ID.5 GTX steps up with a slightly larger 79kWh battery and dual motors producing 250kW, achieving 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds and a 522km WLTP range, thanks to its more aerodynamic design.

In Australia, the ID.4 is the most affordable electric vehicle from the VW Group, comparable to the Cupra Born. However, the ID.4 boasts more interior space by way of its boxier interior, more driving range (544km vs. 511km), greater power (210kW vs. 170kW), and quicker acceleration (0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds vs. 7.0 seconds).

The ID.4 is also better value compared to its VW Group siblings, coming the Cupra Tavascan at $74,490 before on-road costs and Skoda Enyaq $83,490 at on-road costs, as well as the updated Model Y Launch Series from $63,400 before on-road costs.

Both the ID.4 Pro and the ID.5 GTX come packed with standard features, including matrix LED headlights, a 12.9-inch touchscreen with faster software than earlier ID.4s, power-adjustable heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, and a glass roof.

The ID.5 GTX adds a sportier body style and more power, along with front sports seats, premium audio, larger wheels, and unique styling.
