Ahead of a first quarter 2025 Australian release, the BMW M5 Touring has been revealed as a plug-in hybrid super wagon. Using a plug-in hybrid system using a 4.4-litre V8 engine and an electric motor, the M5 makes a massive combined 535kW of power and 1,000Nm of torque, which is enough for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 305km/h. The ‘G99’ M5 Touring is the first M5 wagon to be offered locally, and the first new M5 wagon since the E61 ended production in 2010.
According to the brand, “The M5 Touring’s arrival in Australia follows this year’s introduction of another rapid Touring variant that also wears an M badge – the fully electric, 442kW i5 M60 xDrive Touring – and last year’s launch of the critically acclaimed M3 Touring.”
“The strategy symbolises BMW Australia’s commitment to offering a wide range of solutions for its customers that bring together outstanding driving dynamics, powerful and efficient drive systems, versatility and advanced technology.”
Under the bonnet of the BMW M5 Touring is a 430kW/750Nm 4.4-litre V8 engine that’s paired with a 145kW/280Nm electric motor for combined outputs of 535kW and 1,000Nm. The electric motor draws its power from an 18.6kWh lithium-ion battery, which enables it to travel up to 61km on a charge (WLTP). It uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels.
Its performance claims are: 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 305km/h. Backing up the performance are features such as adaptive dampers, 20-inch front/21-inch rear alloy wheels and a sports exhaust system. According to BMW, the M5 Touring has a 50:50 weight distribution.
Measuring 5,096mm long, 1,970mm wide, 1,506mm tall and riding on a 3,006mm long wheelbase, the M5 Touring is 36mm longer, 70mm wider and 1mm taller than the i5 Touring M60 xDrive, with 11mm more length between the axles.
The M5 Touring’s boot measures 500-litres with the seats up and 1,630L with the seats down. Weighing 2,508kg, the M5 Touring weighs 63kg more than the sedan.
