With the first local deliveries due to commence later this month, Chery Australia has launched its first electric car locally. Priced from $42,990 plus on-road costs, the Chery Omoda E5 is based on the company’s Omoda 5 small SUV but uses an electric motor making 150kW/340Nm that gets its power from a 61.1kWh LFP battery instead for up to 430km of range (WLTP).

Lewis Lu, CEO, Chery Australia stated “We’re thrilled to introduce our first electric vehicle, a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. We’re proud to offer a vehicle that not only delivers outstanding performance and range but also helps reduce our carbon footprint.”

“This launch is a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.”

Sitting on the same platform as the regular Omoda 5, the Chery Omoda E5 uses a 61.1kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery for up to 430km of claimed range on the WLTP cycle. That battery feeds a 150kW/340Nm electric motor, which drives the front wheels. The claimed 0-100km/h time for the Omoda E5 is 7.6 seconds, making it the most powerful Omoda 5 variant on sale.

According to Chery, the Omoda E5’s battery can be charged at up to 80kW on a DC fast charger for a 30 – 80 per cent charge in as little as 28 minutes. AC charging at up to 9.9kW is also available.

Compared to the regular Omoda 5, the Chery Omoda E5 features revised front styling – including the charging port located in the grille – with new alloy wheels, roof rails and an extra rear spoiler. The first 350 units of the Omoda E5 will also wear ‘OMODA’ badging, as it’s branded in other right-hand drive markets like the UK, but later examples will revert to Chery badging like the regular Omoda 5. Under the bonnet of the Omoda E5 is also a front boot.

Inside the Omoda E5 is more different to the regular Omoda 5, with a revised dashboard layout that incorporates larger 12.3-inch displays that replace the Omoda 5’s smaller 10.25-inch units. The gear shifter is now a stalk on the right-hand side of the steering wheel, with the indicators and lights now located on the same left-hand stalk as the wiper controls.
