With 63,356 units sold – an increase of 33 per cent on 2022 – the Ford Ranger has taken out the title of Australia’s best selling car for 2023, taking the crown from the Toyota HiLux that held the title for the past seven years. It marks the first time that a Ford product has topped the local sales charts since 1995, when the EL Falcon was the country’s best-selling vehicle. For the first time in Australia’s motoring history, 1,216,780 new cars were registered in 2023, up 12.5 per cent over 2022.
“There are so many people who play a role in the success of a vehicle. For Ranger, that’s our team of designers, engineers and everyone at Ford who pours their passion into making the vehicle what it is, our dealers who are passionate about serving their customers and communities, and ultimately our Ranger customers whose passion for their vehicle is what gets us up in the morning,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia.
“This number one spot is thanks to the combined passion of all these people. Without any one of them, Ranger wouldn’t be where it is today.”
While Ford topped the model charts with the Ranger, Toyota was still the top selling brand with 215,240 sales in 2023 for a 17.7 per cent share of the new car market. But while Toyota’s result put it in first place, it’s still struggling with production issues and as a result, its 2023 sales figures were down 6.8 per cent on 2022 and 9.9 per cent down on its all time record in 2008 of 238,931 vehicles.
Mazda continued to hold onto second place with 100,008 sales, an increase of 4.5 per cent on 2022’s sales. Ford’s 87,800 sales (+31.8 per cent on 2022) held it in third place, while Kia (76,120 sales – down 2.8 per cent) outsold Hyundai (75,183 sales or up 2.5 per cent) for the second year in a row. Rounding out the top 10 brands were Mitsubishi (63,511 – down 17.5 per cent), MG (58,346 – up 17.7 per cent), Tesla (46,116 – up 135.4 per cent), Subaru (46,114 – up 27 per cent) and Isuzu Ute (45,341 – up 28.7 per cent).
For the first time in history, no regular passenger sedan or hatchback featured on the top 10 selling car list as all entrants were either utes or SUVs. SUVs took 55.8 per cent of new car sales in 2023, which is an increase of the 53.1 per cent they took in 2022.
As expected, electric vehicles increased a lot with 80,217 vehicles sold for an increase of 161.1 per cent on 2022. Hybrid vehicles also sold strongly with 98,439 sales in 2023, which was an increase of 20.3 on 2022. Petrol vehicles remained dominant with 588,622 sales or 48.4 per cent of the market, while diesel vehicles followed with 379,512 sales or 31.2 per cent of the market.
