Mazda CX-70 Launched in Australia as Sportier Five-Seat CX-90

Mazda has launched yet another SUV in Australia: the CX-70, which is essentially a five-seat CX-90.

Priced from $75,970 plus on-road costs, the CX-70 is priced $1,420 higher than its CX-90 sibling, but is only available in the two top-spec grades in the CX-90 range: GT and Azami. Once grades are accounted for, there’s an almost-$10,000 difference in the price of the CX-70 and CX-90. As with the CX-90, two drivetrains are available and each features new 48V mild-hybrid tech to help emissions and performance. Mazda is on a roll with its large SUV range, having just launched the CX-80 as well.

Measuring 5,120mm long, 1,994mm wide, 1,745mm tall and riding on a 3,120mm long wheelbase, the CX-70 is externally identical to the CX-90 aside for the sportier-looking bumpers, wheels, badging and unfortunate lack of roof rails.

Inside, the CX-70’s cabin is identical to the CX-90 aside from the option of burgundy Nappa leather trim on the Azami and a lack of third row of seating. Because of the five-seat layout, the CX-70’s boot features a large under floor storage area for a massive 923-litres of boot space with the seats up and 2,015L with them folded. Unlike the CX-90, the CX-70 features remote seat releases.

Under the bonnet of the Mazda CX-70 is also identical to the CX-90: a choice of two 3.3-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines, the petrol making 254kW/500Nm and the diesel making 187kW/550Nm. Both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

The CX-70 petrol is rated at 8.1L/100km on the combined fuel consumption cycle – 0.1L/100km less than the CX-90 – and the diesel is rated at 5.4L/100km. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain available in both the CX-60 and CX-80 – and in North American CX-70s – is yet to be announced for Australia in the CX-70.
