After being revealed internationally more than 12 months ago, the 2020 Skoda Scala has been launched locally. Offered in three different models in Australia, the Scala replaces the Rapid and competes with cars such as the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 and Volkswagen Golf – the latter of which it shares a platform with.
Priced from $26,990 drive away for the entry level 110TSI six-speed manual (the seven-speed dual-clutch auto adds $2,000), the Scala is well equipped with kit such as low-speed AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, rear AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, driver attention monitoring, seven airbags, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, heated/auto-folding mirrors, automatic headlights and wipers, a digital driver’s display, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and wireless charging.
All Scala models also include unusual kit in the segment such as an electric tailgate, scrolling rear indicators and Skoda’s ‘simply clever’ features such as an umbrella and bin in the driver’s door, a double-sided boot floor and ‘teeth’ in the cup holders to help opening bottles while at speed.
The Monte Carlo ($33,990 drive away) adds dual-zone climate control, sportier styling elements such as dark 18-inch wheels, cornering LED headlights, a panoramic glass roof, keyless entry and start, and lowered sports suspension with different driving modes.
The flagship Launch Edition ($35,990 drive away) adds all of the optional equipment as standard – aside from the panoramic glass roof – plus unique wheels and chrome grille treatment.
Standard on all Scala models for the moment is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque. 110TSI models are available with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic – the auto is standard on the upper Monte Carlo and Launch Edition models. The manual is rated at 4.9L/100km combined, and the auto 5.5L/100km.
Available for the 110TSI are two option packages: the $4,300 Driver Support Pack with half leather and suede upholstery with a 10-way electric driver’s seat, automatic parking, heated front and rear seats, dual-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The $3,900 Tech Pack adds a 9.2-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, keyless entry and start, an alarm, an upgraded sound system, cornering lights, wireless Apple CarPlay and voice control. A $1,300 panoramic glass roof (for the 110TSI and Launch Edition), and $1,200 electrically-releasing tow bar are available as stand alone options.
Available on the Monte Carlo is a $4,300 Travel Pack, which adds the larger 9.2-inch media screen, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, auto parking, heated front and rear seats, the upgraded sound system, paddle shifters, wireless Apple CarPlay and voice control.
Service packages are available to purchase upfront – three years/45,000km is $800, and five years/75,000km is $1,400.
Dimensionally, the Scala measures in at 4.36 metres long, 1.79m wide, 1.47m high and with a 467-litre boot. This compares well with rivals such as the Toyota Corolla, which measures 4.38m long, 1.79m wide, 1.44m high and a 217-litre boot – less than half the capacity of the Scala.
The Skoda Scala hits local dealers in June 2020, and it will be followed closely by the Kamiq small SUV also in June, and the fourth-generation Octavia mid-sizer later in the year.
