The Subaru XV is dead. Long live the XV. In its place is the new 2023 Subaru Crosstrek, which is likely due in Australia in 2023. Using the same Subaru Global Platform as the current XV, as well as almost everything else made by the company, the Crosstrek will replace the XV name globally, but it will still fill the small SUV role in the Subaru lineup to compete with cars like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Seltos.
“Combining a compact body with a rugged and sporty design, the Crosstrek features full-fledged SUV performance thanks to Subaru’s unique symmetrical AWD, making it a versatile crossover SUV ideal for any driving environment, whether in the city or for outdoor adventures” said the company.
“A faithful companion with versatility and reliability, the new Crosstrek is designed for those seeking a vehicle that is both a daily driver and weekend companion ready to take on new adventures. It is ideal for those who desire a fulfilling driving experience coupled with a level of freedom never experienced before.”
Stylistically, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is clearly very related to the current XV, but with more adventurous new lighting units at both the front and rear. New wheels are fitted in either 17- or 18-inch sizing, with a black-coloured option available for the first time. Unbelievably for modern times, the Crosstrek is actually slightly smaller than the XV it replaces.
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek measures 4,480mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,580mm tall and with a 2,670mm long wheelbase. This makes it 5mm shorter, no wider, 35mm less tall and 5mm longer in wheelbase than the outgoing model. According to Subaru, despite the shorter exterior, interior space is similar to the outgoing XV, which means a boot around the same 310-litres as the current car.
Under the bonnet of the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek in Japan is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain that’s likely similar to the one used in the current XV hybrid. Japanese media reported recently that a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine was in development specifically for the Crosstrek and its non-SUV Impreza sibling, but that’s yet to come to fruition, as are Australian details.
Inside the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is a dashboard that’s largely identical to the WRX and its WRX Sportswagon sibling, with a large 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen fitted with equipment like satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The digital driver’s display in Japanese market WRXs is not present in the Crosstrek, instead it has a set of traditional dials with a screen in the middle.
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek will likely go on sale in Australia in 2023. Stay tuned to DiscoverAuto for the latest automotive news and reviews.
