Sales of new cars in September 2020 were dominated by some of Australia’s favourite utes, with the Ford Ranger the top selling vehicle in September, just ahead of the Toyota HiLux.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ (FCAI) figures released earlier this week show that total new-car sales in September 2020 were down by 21.8 per cent compared with September 2019, with only 68,985 vehicles sold versus the 88,181 sold in the same month last year. The means that 2020 had the weakest September result in 18 years and shows us that COVID-19 restrictions continue to wreak havoc across the country and especially in Victoria.
Compared to last year, year to date new-car sales are down by 20.5 per cent, with only 644,891 vehicles sold so far in 2020. After years of sales growth, Australians won’t buy the 1 million new cars that we have become accustomed to acquiring each calendar year.
The news hasn’t been all bad however, with Ford’s Ranger ute becoming the nation’s best selling car for the second time in history, bringing to an end the Toyota RAV4’s record run, which had topped the sales charts for the past 2 months. Whilst the Toyota HiLux might have dropped to second place, it is still very much on track to become Australia’s top-selling car for a very formidable fifth year in a row.
