After a long wait, Toyota Australia has finally released a new addition to its lineup of SUVs. Slotting in between the C-HR and the RAV4, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross – as the name suggests – is based on the Corolla and offers a more practical SUV choice to the more style-focused C-HR.
Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations for Toyota Australia, Sean Hanley said that the new SUV “offers the richest suite of active safety and connected services technologies of any Toyota model to date”.
The Corolla Cross is offered in both petrol and hybrid guises – the later being available in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive but the petrol is two-wheel drive only. The petrol model has a 2.0 litre ‘Dynamic Force’ engine under the bonnet, paired with a ‘Direct Shift’ CVT transmission that features a physical first gear combined with a CVT belt. In the Corolla Cross, this drivetrain develops 126kW of power and 202Nm of torque.
The 2.0-litre engine in the hybrid variant is a first for Australia and is paired with an electric motor, developing a combined output of 146kW sending power to the wheels through an e-CVT transmission. All-wheel drive models have a secondary electric motor on the rear axle and both use a lithium-ion battery that’s located under the rear seat.
Toyota quotes fuel consumption for the petrol variant as 6.0l/100km, while hybrid 2WD models are rated at 4.3l/100km and hybrid AWD at 4.4l/100km. Petrol and 2WD hybrid models have a torsion beam rear suspension set up, while AWD hybrid models have a multi-link rear suspension set up.
The interior is a similar design to that of the Corolla hatch and sedan, but with more room in almost every way. Boot space measures between 380-litres and 436-litres – which the seats erect – depending on which model is chosen.
There are three grades of Corolla Cross – GX, GXL and Atmos – all grades are available as 2WD petrol and 2WD hybrid, only GXL and Atmos are available as AWD hybrid. The standard features on the Corolla Cross are as follows:
